How to solve the shortage of Helpers in your club
Recruiting Helpers takes a lot of time and puts pressure on those responsible. That’s why we’ve put together some tips to make things easier for you.
Events would not be possible without the support of many volunteers. However, organising Helpers is a major challenge for many clubs. Usually, the same people do all the helping while others avoid getting involved. As a result, the hard-working members feel unfairly treated and stop volunteering. The consequence: the club has fewer and fewer Helpers.
Make your own members contribute
The easiest way to find Helpers is to require your club members to contribute. At the club’s AGM, a resolution can set a minimum number of Tasks that each member must complete. This makes the club’s expectations of its members clear and transparent. It is important to define exactly what the consequences will be if members fail to complete their Tasks. The club can then impose sanctions at the end of the year if certain members have not met the requirements.
For younger members, it can be a good idea to involve their parents. They can take on the same Jobs as active members. However, they should be assigned a smaller share, as they are not club members themselves.
Don’t assign Tasks to Helpers
Some clubs assign members to Tasks themselves. Members are rarely happy with this arrangement. The reasons are obvious: the date is inconvenient, they don’t like the Job, or they can’t help out alongside their friends. That’s why giving members the freedom to choose their own Tasks can make a huge difference.
